OVERVIEW
The BMW DISA valve, also known as the Differentiated Intake System or Individual Control Intake System, optimizes the engine's running under partial and full load as it adjusts the intake manifold runner length to improve engine performance.
FUNCTION/TECHNICAL OPERATION
Periodic pressure fluctuations are produced in the intake pipe by the induction strokes of the cylinders. These pressure waves run through the intake tube and are reflected at the closed inlet valves. The intake tube length precisely adapted to the valve timing ensures that a pressure peak of the reflected air wave reaches the inlet valve just before the end of its opening range. A post-charging effect is achieved in this way. This post-charging effect conveys a larger volume of fresh mixture into the cylinder. DISA utilizes the advantages of short and long intake pipes.
Short intake pipes or intake pipes with a large diameter have the effect of producing higher output values in the upper engine speed range together with lower torque values in the medium engine speed range. Long intake pipes or intake pipes with a small diameter develop high torque in the medium engine speed range.
SYMPTOMS/FAULTS
- Rattling noise coming from the DISA valve.
- SES light is on in dashboard.
- A lean mixture fault or rough running at idle.
- Displaying DTC codes and a loss in low end torque.
- There may be a rattling, buzzing or clicking noise coming from the engine.
- Fault codes: lean condition P1083, P1085.
- Front oxygen sensor lean P1090, P1092.
- Oxygen sensor slow response P1087, P1089.
- Cylinder misfire P0311, P0312, P0313, P0314, P0315, P0316.
- Fuel control mixture lean (bank 2 sensor 1) and p0174 system too lean.
- Puffing/sucking noises coming from DISA when diaphram is torn.
FAILURE
The cause of the failure is the weak, hardworking plastic components, rubbing, wearing and vibrating together causing the flap to operate at the wrong times and eventually leading to destruction of the flap plate. The broken pieces of the flap and the metal retaining pin that holds the flap in position can often fall off into the engine causing severe engine damage.
The diaphragm connected to the crank arm is common to tear which causes the DISA body vacuum to leak. Without a retained vacuum inside the DISA body the flap cannot be electronically actuated by the engine computer and remains opened all the time.
SOLUTION
Using our over engineered kit the weak plastic components of the DISA valve, flap and crank lever are replaced with aluminum parts, retained by our precision machined screw which tightly retains the two components together; eliminating wear and the need for the retaining pin which can enter the engine. Our kit is completely redesigned to never fail. Our kit also includes a high temperature O-ring to make a good seal between the DISA unit and the manifold eliminating any air leaks. The DISA Is actuated electronically but cannot function without a vacuum. Also included is a replacement diaphram, making it a COMPLETE rebuild kit for your DISA unit.
Our kit is the most comprehensive kit available online to rebuild your 3.0ltr DISA unit. If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact us.
